Tale From The Con: Bull Durham Edition

So the two day NC Comicon in Durham this weekend was both my worst single day at a convention and my best.

Saturday varied between being empty (in my section), to being so crowded attendees were penguin walking to get through the hordes clogging the aisle. I talked with a few folks, but that was it. Zero sales. Nothing even remotely hopeful happened. It was nine hours of soul crushing nothing.

To top it off I worked the entire time on a print of Baby Groot, using my printer I brought to scan it in, and then inking and coloring it on my laptop. I used a small screen to let passersbys watch what I was doing the entire time. I had gorgeous, uber-professional, top-of-the-line, 5-star photo paper that'll never deteriorate to print it on...and it didn't work. It kept leaving two discolored marks on each print. The printer had a hard time loading, and even the times the paper misloaded and was spit out with no ink on it, it had the marks. I tried both photo paper and special paper settings. I checked the alignment and cleaned the cartridges, even though they printed fine on normal paper. I rebooted the printer and my computer. If I'd known a priest, I would've had an exorcism performed on the damn thing. Nothing worked. My big plan to sale prints and do on-demand color art for folks was ruined.

So all that was pretty devastating.

Sunday was a shorter day with less people, but almost right off the bat it was a different, more normal feel. I had a steady stream of people come up and express interest in my work and buy things. In fact, it was far and away the most I've sold in one day. I even put out two of the flawed Groot prints that printed clean enough to sale at a discount, and sold both for $5. If it had been at a local con I would've made up the cost of admission with my sales!

Overall it was a pretty impressive, well set up con. Artists were segregated from dealers so I didn't have a dealer's book shelves or racks squeezing into what little space I had. There was no space between tables but there was more than enough room to walk in and out of the aisles for creators, which was a refreshing change. The floor was carpeted, the chairs were cushy and comfortable.

The table setup is a bit odd with some creators, like me, getting clearly marked 6 foot space that took half of two tables. This made using my table cloth impossible, but my set up covered the whole top of the table and my banner acted as a table skirt, so it didn't matter.

The banners from Vistaprint.com worked well. I put the tall banner stand together wrong twice before I saw the properly assembled banner of Superville's Bobby and Suzanne Capobianco (who were a source of support and advice during the con, thanks guys!). Once assembled, it worked perfectly all weekend, and came apart and packed up easily at the end.

The regular horizontal banner I actually stuck to the very edge of my table using Scotch Restickable Tabs for Mounting. I've had a lot of problems with paper I put up with tape coming down during conventions, but this worked like a charm, not requiring readjustment all weekend, even on a 6 x 2.5 foot vinyl banner!

The set up with the screen and printer was a lot of trouble and I didn't really get to try it before the con, since I got electricity at the last minute. The screen did attract interest and probably prompted one sale. But mostly it was nice to inspire folks who were thinking of doing art by showing them the process. The printer set up could work if I get normal photo  paper. I might try it again if I do a big con again someday.

And I did get to ink a variant cover for Issue 5 on Sunday. More on that later....

College Follies at NC Comicon Today and Tomorrow!!!

Here's pics of my set up for my College Follies booth for today and tomorrow at NC Comicon at the Durham Convention Center in Durham. It runs from 10 am -7 pm today. I came up yesterday to set up but they didn't have my electricity ready so I have to get there early today. No big deal. I figured out how to get the banners up and to fit all the comics and prints on the table and that's the important thing. I fully expect to get it hooked up by the time the con opens and be working on things by then.

Tales From Another Con

So I did Jay and Eddie's Comicbook Show yesterday. It's a smaller con, basically in a large room at a hotel. Definite advantages to the venue: It's well lit, carpeted,  nice looking, air conditioned (maybe a bit too much, it was chilly!) and it's small enough that it's hard to miss you.

I felt there weren't as many people passing by but I sold slightly more. I think there was less folks who just came to hang out or just see what a comic convention was like than at the last con, which was held in a building at the Fair Grounds at the same time as the Earth Day Fair.

The table was nice this time, but I came prepared with a table cloth designed for a 6 foot table. Best $20 I've spent. I just laid it on there and it fit the table exactly and securely. It seemed no worse for ware after I was done, so I should be able to reuse it indefinitely.

The table was slightly wider and I was able to fit everything in and have just enough room to draw. I did both the cover and variant cover for issue four, which was a great way to pass the time. Dropping the contest really helped on the space. My table was tight but uncluttered, though I'll have to think about how to do future cons as I'll be adding more comics to sale.

I'm not sure if positioning is that important at a con that small. Basically there's just tables around the walls and in the middle of the room, so anyone wanting to see everything just does a loop around the room. Depending on if the person proceeded straight at the door or took a left, I was either one of the first or one of the last booths they'd come across, but it's a short circuit around the room so it didn't matter all that much.

I got sandwiched between two comic creators. And not knocking non-comic artists, because my neighbors at the last con were fantastically talented and nice, but there is something really awesome about the camaraderie you get from folks who are doing the same thing you are.

Niki Pell
On my right were the talented couple of  Bobby and Suzanne Capobianco of Superville Comics, with their series and tons of Minion fan art (including Jay and Silent Bob minions!). On the other was  Katie Bishop, the Hawkeye from Young Avengers. Well, not really. It was a fantastically gifted artist named Niki Pell who did a great Katie Bishop cosplay at Heroes Con I got a shot of last month. She does superhero jewelry and a comic called Wander.

I was definitely more connected  to the other comic artists there.  I'm apparently on a Facebook group of regional artists called the Scattered Pencil Society (one of those weird Facebook things, where you end up joining a group and getting its posts, without receiving or accepting an invitation, but this is one of the good ones). I was fortunate enough to see and respond to a Facebook post about them doing a podcast and post-con gathering but they seemed nice enough that they probably would've included me anyway.

Bobby and Suzanne Capobianco
So Bobby and fellow artist Kev Lyerly interviewed me for a podcast, which was great. And then about eight of us got together at Panera Bread for supper and chatted, which was pretty informative and inspiring.

I still wish I'd gotten their earlier. I got there an hour early, which was more than enough time to set everything up but not enough time to explore the room and see who/what else was there. Last time, the con ending was like the Death Star evacuation scene with everyone packing up and getting out within 15 minutes. This time it seemed like everyone was like "After that port exhaust thing on the last Death Star, we're getting out of here at the first sign of the rebel fleet." Half my row was out half an hour before it ended and practically everyone else was out by 4:30 (the time the con ended). So next time I'll try getting there even earlier.

Overall good experience. I'm checking into a local con in September, if I can get into that one, I'll do it.

Issue Two is off to the presses!

Issue two has been sent off for print. I'll have copies of both the regular and variant edition for $2 at Jay & Eddie's Comicbook Show on July 19th from 10 am-4:30 pm at Quality Inn and Suites, 2008 S. Hawthorne Road, in Winston-Salem. I'll also be selling $5 prints of the issue's variant cover. The issue should also be out on Amusedom and DriveThruComics that week too.

My first flyers for surprise comic conventions!

Page 12 is finished but I don't have time to post panels or write about it. I've got a morning assignment, followed by a race to get to a comic convention in Archdale to deliver this flyer (shown below) I hastily made and put together yesterday.

As far as I knew the only local con this Fall was one in Winston-Salem at the end of October by Burke Street Comics. Well Burke Street is instead doing one tomorrow, which I only found out about a few days ago. That gave me way too little lead time to see if I could go as a comic creator, but I could at least print flyers for their handout table. I figured I could just get the flyers printed Saturday, no sweat. Then Thursday night I saw was there was a convention by Stormcrow Comics in Archdale today.

So I slapped this flyer together between work and finishing page 12 yesterday and called the first print shop that was still open after five to see if I could get it printed (the UPS Store, which did a good job for a reasonable price). Doing color was a bit more expensive than I would've liked but I didn't have time to design something in black and white. Maybe next time. I've got 200 of these little flyers printed up. Hopefully they'll get the attention of some folks around here.

I'll be posting the finished art from page 12 with commentary tomorrow before hitting the convention right down the street from me.
